2022 Community Awards Recipients Announced

The Cretin-Derham Hall Community Awards Dinner was held on October 24, 2022 at the Saint Paul Hotel. This wonderful evening celebrates all of the best of our community! These Community Awards recognize the significant accomplishments of our distinguished alumni and friends, along with the support and congratulations of the entire community.

Katie Williams Szyman ‘84 serves as Corporate Vice President - Critical Care of Edwards Lifesciences. Prior to 2015, she was employed for more than 20 years at Medtronic where she served as its Senior Vice President and President of the global diabetes business from 2009 to 2014. Szyman graduated from the University of St. Thomas and earned her master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School. |

Hugh Derham AwardThis award is presented to a woman who exemplifies Derham Hall’s ideals of Christian love, service and objectives. |
|
Kris followed the Christian call to be of service to those in need. Kris studied American Sign Language, earning her degree in Deaf Services through the University of Wisconsin at Superior. She also holds a Master’s in Vocational Rehabilitation, a degree which led to certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Minnesota. She served clients with wide-range of disabilities and assisted them find employment opportunities. In 2008, Kris completed a degree in Theology and was eligible for Ordination in the Lutheran Church. She was a Lutheran pastor in Hovland, Minnesota for sixteen years. Kris used her interest in ministry and music to connect people, and mentored youth through her church and community. |

Eugene and Mary Frey Community AwardThis award is presented to an individual or individuals who reflect the mission and values of Cretin-Derham Hall through involvement with Cretin-Derham Hall and other community interests. |

As a founding member of the Lambert Dickson Group of RBC Wealth Management, Mike is a Senior Vice President, Managing Director and Financial Advisor. Amy attended the University of St. Catherine, earning a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition. She is certified in the fields of health, wellness, and healing. Mike and Amy support each other by providing selfless examples of how to give energy to the people and activities they care about most. Currently, Mike serves as Chair of the Board for Cretin-Derham Hall. |

Monsignor Ambrose Hayden Legacy AwardThis award is presented to an individual or individuals whose spirit and energy reflect an understanding of the need to preserve the past and provide for future generations. |
|
Joe and Maddie have been actively involved with supporting Gillette Children’s Hospital, hosting events to help raise funds and spread awareness for all that Gillette does to support children who need care for complex medical conditions. They have been longtime supporters of the Highland Friendship Club, a local organization that provides social and community connections for teens and adults with disabilities. They also actively support Crescent Cove, a hospice offering care for children with shortened life expectancy. |

Signum Fidei AwardThis new award symbolizes ‘Rising Star’ and will be presented to one younger male and one younger female for outstanding eminence in their field of endeavor or for outstanding service in the community. |

Dr. Harris studied Neuroscience and Behavior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and continued her education at Meharry Medical College in Tennessee. Her residency program is in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Recently, she was recognized as an “Outstanding Resident in Gynecologic Oncology” at the Mayo Clinic. Long term, she hopes to practice in a system where she can both provide clinical and surgical care, while also mentoring younger doctors. |

Anna studied Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement at Saint Mary’s University and interned with the Saint Paul Police Department, where she achieved a milestone in St. Paul Police history - at the age of 21, she was the first Female Academy president. Anna currently serves as a patrol officer in the Western District and enjoys being a positive impact in the St. Paul community.

Lance attended the University of Pittsburgh and served as the 2010 Student Commencement Speaker. In 2013, Lance continued his education, earning a law degree at Washington University in St. Louis. He worked as a corporate associate attorney in legal firms and is currently the Associate General Counsel with Pentair providing legal support for corporate transactions with mergers and acquisitions and securities. |

Jim’s career in the medical device industry contributed to device developments that help patients manage cardiorespiratory disease. Jim worked with fellow Cretin-Derham Hall class of 2004 alum Dr. Stephen Richardson in the early days of the pandemic to develop a device that could be used in the case of a ventilator shortage to save lives in emergency situations. The FDA-approved device is called The Coventor and has been donated to developing countries and the Strategic National Stockpile and has a direct impact on saving lives. |

Richard R. Engler Lifetime Achievement AwardThe Richard R. Engler Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to one recipient to honor a lifetime of exemplary service and dedication to Cretin-Derham Hall and the broader CDH community. This award is presented in recognition of the long history of service by Dick Engler, the President of Cretin-Derham Hall between 1990 and 2015, whose commitment and hard work impacted generations of CDH families. |

Brother Michael Rivers, FSC, has been a Christian Brother for over 50 years and celebrated his retirement from CDH in 2019 after 37 years of service as a Learning Lab Teacher. He has made a difference for thousands of young people over the course of his career. Brother Michael earned a Distinguished Lasallian Educators Award in 2015. He has dedicated his life to God through educating every student entrusted to his care and continues his involvement with the school during the week as he visits with students and staff. |
