October 21, 2024

The Cretin-Derham Hall Community Awards Dinner was held on Monday, October 21, 2024 at the Saint Paul Hotel. This wonderful evening celebrates the CDH community and honors alumni and friends from Cretin, Derham Hall and Cretin-Derham Hall. The Community Awards recognize the significant accomplishments of our distinguished alumni and friends, along with the support and congratulations of the entire community.

The following awards were presented:

The Saint De La Salle Award

Presented annually in honor of the Christian Brothers to a distinguished alum in recognition of his outstanding service to his community and to Cretin and Cretin-Derham Hall. This award recognizes achievements in ministry exemplifying the highest and best traditions of Cretin High School.

John Conway '69

After graduating from Cretin in 1969, John attended Saint Mary’s College and transferred to Saint Thomas.  He started his career servicing equipment at Northwest and Delta Airlines.  During this time, John and his wife, Sandy, established a cleaning business and managed 25 commercial and residential cleaning contracts.  They decided early on to prioritize the dignity of work and wages, including healthcare, for their cleaning staff.  This commitment to equitable practice sustained their business and upheld the principles of social responsibility, allowing their employees to lead lives of dignity and security.

John and Sandy adopted five children and they are dedicated to providing a nurturing family life with opportunities for growth and love. Sandy was a swim coach and John coached Special Olympics basketball and softball teams.

John notes that his heroes are his mother and father, who, like St. John Baptist de la Salle, instilled in him the meaning of how to be a “man for others” from an early age, demonstrating through their actions the importance of compassion and service to those in need. Ultimately, they exemplified the principle of “paying it forward” and leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and service that continues to inspire him daily.

After college, Jane spent time between working for the family business - Metzger Building Materials - and teaching afternoons at Webster Elementary School.  Eventually, she transitioned to a full-time position at Metzger, working side-by-side with her parents as she took on more responsibility. After her father retired in 2011, Jane was named to her current role of President of Metzger Building Materials.

Jane reflects on her family’s commitment to Catholic education and their generosity toward supporting Catholic schools. The Eugene & Mary Frey Community Award

Instituted in 1999 in recognition of the tremendous commitment Eugene ‘48 and Mary Frost Frey ‘52 have demonstrated to Cretin-Derham Hall and the larger community, this award is presented to individuals who reflect the mission and values of Cretin-Derham Hall through deep connection and involvement with Cretin-Derham Hall and other community interests.

Joe '84 and Katy Harris

After attending Cretin High School, Joe attended school at the University of Minnesota while working at Midwest Vending, eventually purchasing the company. Joe enjoyed data collection, which helped develop better technology for vending machines. He notes that developing people from within the company is important to him. The sense of belonging came from his experiences at Cretin.

The sense of community and belonging was special for the Harris family, especially when their daughter Shannon graduated in 2010 from Cretin-Derham Hall. Shannon suffered from Cystic Fibrosis and was in the hospital often. The CDH community and prayers helped carry Shannon and the Harris family through very difficult times.

The community support they received has inspired them to give back to others. Joe and Katy established “The Shannon Open,” a golf tournament named for their daughter, who lost her fight with Cystic Fibrosis in 2017. The Open is dedicated to continuing the fight to find a cure and they have raised over $700,000 toward that goal.

In addition to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, proceeds raised from this event are also donated to the Cretin-Derham Hall Shannon Harris Scholarship Fund – which provides significant financial support for students with a chronic illness, or to students with a family member with chronic illness.

Two of three Stewart children graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall. Katie also served on the CDH Board and the 2020-2025 Strategic Planning Committee.
