Boys Basketball Section Champs
April 7, 2020
On March 12, the Boys Basketball team defeated the East Ridge Raptors 51-48 to win their section. On March 13, the state tournament was canceled.
They went into the game knowing that there was a possibility it would be the last time they would play as a team. That week, changes were coming fast - March Madness was canceled on March 12 - and they knew they couldn't count on more than the current game.
"I told them to treat this like the state tournament," said Coach Jerry Kline. "They went out with their best effort, really gave it their all. For that hour and a half, they didn't worry about anything except for the game."
It was an exceptional game in an exceptional season.
"My favorite memory from the season was when Curtis [Jones '20] hit a buzzer-beater to take us to the state tournament!" said J'Vonne Hadley '20. "I will never forget that amazing moment while it was happening and the joy of every single person afterward!"
The next day, the team gathered at school and learned that the tournament had been called off.
"You can imagine the emotion in that room," Kline said. "We went from jumping for joy to knowing it wouldn't happen."
Kline reflected on this year as one of his favorite years as a coach.
"The seniors have put in so much - they got along, there were no egos on the court, and it was one of the most fun years from a coaching standpoint. We had a very talented group of young men who put us in a great position to make it to state."
Congratulations, Raiders, on a great season! We can't wait to see some of you back on the CDH court next year. Seniors, we'll be rooting you on wherever you go next!
