Campus Ministry Leads Students to Put Faith in Action

Campus Ministry provides opportunities for nurturing the Catholic faith and the faith of other traditions through communal prayer, service, and acts of justice. Initiatives are offered to everyone and provide connection within the school and out in the broader community. Here are just a few of the activities undertaken this school year.
Empty Bowls
After 16 years of Empty Bowls and the CDH support for Heifer International, thousands of gallons of soup, tens of thousands of buns and pats of butter, and over 15,000 ceramic bowls, some might think this annual gathering of our CDH community might have gotten old, but no, in fact, quite the contrary.
Empty Bowls 2018 was another great success for two important measures: the experience of community felt by all who attended, as well as the significant funds that were raised to fight hunger and starvation.
Beginning in the spring of 2003, CDH students, staff, alumni, parents, and friends started to gather for a bowl of soup and a piece of bread. And in every year since, friends, old and new, have continued to gather, to share a simple meal, to share stories, and to share in a commitment to end the plight of those facing hunger and starvation. Thank you to all who have joined us throughout the years, with a special thanks to those who have attended many or all 16 of our Empty Bowls or have volunteered their time, made soups, bread, ceramic bowls, or donated silent auction items, or provided direct financial support.
This year’s Empty Bowls raised over $8,000. Once again, the success of Empty Bowls is made possible only because of the generosity of many individuals, groups, and businesses partners, and friends including:
Br. Michael Lee Anderson, FSC, Carmel & Raymond Ayotte, Antoinette & Blair Baker, Julie & Christopher Baker, Lisa & Bruce Becker, Pat Brethorst, D. And a special thank you to all of who joined us during Justice Week for soup and bread, conversations and support, and continue to be committed to helping end hunger and starvation in our world.
And as always, a special thanks to our student coordinators, seniors Megan Commers, Claire McMahon, Frannie Nicolo, Katherine Kruser, Amy Rueter, Katie Schearer, juniors Elizabeth Everson, Allison Reding, Carolina Schuster, Mary Grace Shearon, Andrew Theisen, Karissa Tschida, Lynn Willems, and sophomores Ana Cullen, Will Domler, Max Karas, Olivia Kalla, Ellie Murphy, Sarah Munson.
Together, with over 75 student volunteers, their work on behalf of Heifer International will help many families from all corners of the earth become increasingly self-sufficient.
Again, thanks to all who helped make Empty Bowls 2018 a great success. Please add February 6, 2019, to your calendars for Empty Bowls 2019!

Habitat for Humanity
In a perfect world, all would know the blessing of a safe, quality, affordable home. It is with that goal in mind that Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and Cretin-Derham Hall stand as partners, committed to doing what we can in helping bring about that reality.
Twin Cities Habitat invites all of us to help make affordable housing a reality for all. Together, we can work to advance affordable ownership opportunities, promote access to safe, quality, and affordable housing across the continuum of housing, promote financial stability for individuals and families, and cultivate and preserve healthy and vibrant communities. In Minnesota, 600,000 families pay more than they can afford for housing. Affordable housing means families can focus on employment, education, and healthcare. Over 11,600 public school students experienced homelessness last school year. Access to stable housing improves school performance.
This past year, many CDH students, staff, parents, and alumni were working across the Twin Cities helping families know the blessings of a home. A special thanks to all of our winter and spring Habitat builders: Grace Collmann, Laura Espinosa, Lauren Swords, Diego Vargas, Stella Dolan, Ava Manacelli, Nickolas Owsley, Nicolas Paredes Sepulveda, Ms. Sophie Mongoven, SJW, Mr. Dick Marthaler, Mr. Peter Gleich.
