November 20, 2017

Students, faculty, and staff had the privilege of listening to former Astronaut and Captain Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper'80 who returned to campus on  November 17, 2017.

Stefanyshyn-Piper has an impressive science career, including the Navy and NASA.  Upon graduation from Derham Hall, she went on to study mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She advanced her education with a Master of Science degree in engineering from MIT in 1985.

Stefanyshyn-Piper began her career in the U.S. Navy and completed training at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, FL as a Navy Basic Diving Officer and Salvage Officer. In April of 1996, she was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. Stefanyshyn-Piper was part of two space missions lasting 12 and 16 days.

Our students had the opportunity to listen to Stefanyshyn-Piper about her career path and ask questions.

Stefanyshyn-Piper left the students with, "This is my career story, what will yours be?"
