CDH Student Blazes Trail in Automotive Internship at Mauer Chevrolet

February 26, 2025

For students looking to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, internships can be a game-changer. This year, Cretin-Derham Hall launched its first CDH Internship at Mauer Chevrolet, and its pilot student, Andrew Jensen ‘25, has turned this opportunity into a resounding success.

From a young age, Andrew has been captivated by motors—taking apart machines, repairing them, and figuring out how they work. Now, as he prepares for a future in motor development and design, his internship at Mauer Chevrolet has provided the hands-on experience and industry exposure that solidified his career path.

"When Ms. Dougherty sent an email about this opportunity, I jumped at the chance," Andrew reflected. Working alongside ASE World Class Master Technicians, he gained first-hand knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repairs, and emerging automotive technologies. More than just observing, he actively contributed to projects, learning both the technical skills of the trade and the practical realities of the field.

Beyond technical expertise, the internship provided unexpected but invaluable lessons. "One of the best parts has been the advice from the technicians—not just on what to do, but more importantly, what not to do," Andrew said. The gap between textbook engineering principles and real-world application became clear through these lessons, often delivered with humor but always carrying real insight.

As he prepares to enter Minnesota State University, Mankato’s automotive program, this experience has given him a critical head start. "This internship has made me feel more confident and prepared as I move into my program," Andrew said. "The skills and insights I’ve gained here will be a strong foundation for my future career in motor development and design."

CDH alum and Mauer Auto Group’s Human Resource Manager, Tony Leseman '01, praised Andrew’s work ethic and the impact of the internship program. Andrew came in eager to learn, and he’s taken full advantage of this opportunity. Watching him grow in skill and confidence has been incredible. This program isn’t just about learning how to turn a wrench—it’s about understanding the industry, the technology, and the customer service aspect that makes a great technician. We’re proud to have partnered with CDH to provide this kind of real-world experience.

The success of this internship demonstrates the power of CDH NEXT’s commitment to career-connected learning. With industry mentorship, the CDH Internship at Mauer Chevrolet is helping students take real steps toward their futures—one hands-on project at a time.

For students interested in pursuing a career in automotive technology, engineering, or mechanics, this internship provides a unique opportunity to gain industry experience before college. Applications for future participants can be found on the CDH Counseling Google Classroom page or through Ms. Dougherty.
