CDH Students Make a Difference with Habitat for Humanity

October 9, 2023

On September 29, nine CDH students and two teachers volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity building site in Farmington, MN. The students who participated in this community service were Matt Baumberger ‘24, Drew Brass ‘25, Katie Chestovich ‘24, Finn Dougherty ‘24, Julia Haas ‘25, Nolan Heuermann ‘24, Lauren Jennrich ‘25, Andrew Jensen ‘25 and Molly Magnuson ‘24.

The crew of 11 spent the day working on two neighboring homes. One of these homes was already enclosed, while the other was in the process of construction, with plans for roof rafters and roof installation. Their tasks for the day included installing insulation and a vapor barrier, cutting lumber, building a landing over a stairwell in one home, and framing interior walls in the other.

Katie Chestovich, one of the student volunteers, enjoyed her experience, especially the insight that was given through the on-site directors and teachers. “This opportunity seemed like a great way to help positively engage with my community. It always feels good to give back and develop a sense of social responsibility." Matt Baumberger had his own thoughts on the program. "I choose to do Habitat for humanity because it directly benefits families in need and you learn skills applicable in your own life."

Peter Gleich, one of the volunteer teachers who has been involved in many of these building days, spoke about the crew coming away from their day with a new and deeper understanding of all that goes into building a safe, quality home and what that can mean for a family. “Together, we helped a family come one day closer to having a home, not just a house, but a place to call home, to put down roots!"

"I love going on the Habitat for Humanity days!” said Tim Teuber, the other volunteer teacher. “ It's a great way to interact with students in a setting outside of the classroom. They get to see you as a learner alongside them. Most importantly, it's an easy and fun way to 'Love the Dear Neighbor' and help those truly in need of a basic human right: a safe and affordable place to call home."

This was just one of many Habitat for Humanity build days throughout the year. The next one will be on Nov. 2 and they will be working in St. Paul. See Mr. Gleich in Campus Ministry if you have any questions or would like to get involved.
