Celebrating Raider Pride by Giving Back

This school year has been massively different in many ways, but the students most recently felt the loss of Homecoming week. Homecoming has been a long tradition of coming together as a community and celebrating who we are. One of the ways we chose to keep the heart of Homecoming alive, despite the absence of the festivities, was through a food and hygiene drive.
Organized by the Student Council, the drive supported the food shelf that is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The donations go primarily to students at St. Catherine’s University. Many of the students there, and all over the country, are experiencing food insecurity. The food shelf provides these students with good food and other household products that they couldn’t otherwise afford. It provides them with a dignified way to accept help from the community around them.
Service has always been one of the core values of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and therefore of CDH. This has become even more prevalent due to the pandemic.
“Donating food to people in need is so important and more relevant than ever," said Lexi Rooney '21, one of the chairs of the drive. "COVID-19 has made it even more difficult for families and individuals who are less fortunate to obtain daily necessities, such as food, which is why it is so important that we donate and provide for those people in need. It is our job to care for our dear neighbors and ensure they have access to proper nutrition.”
Students and their families brought donations throughout our “Raider Pride Week," and we delivered 275 pounds of food and hygiene products to St. Kate’s on Monday afternoon. Jennifer Tacheny has worked closely with CDH to facilitate this drive and was there to accept the donations for the shelf. She could not thank us and everyone who donated enough. These supplies will make a huge difference to students facing food insecurity and to those that just need some help in a trying time for all of us.
