El Otro Lado Trip Will Immerse Students in Immigration
November 17, 2021
Our Justice Education Trips are an essential part of CDH, helping students become citizens of the world. A new trip, "El Otro Lado," will be offered this summer for rising juniors and seniors.
This trip, which is hostel by Cathedral High School, a Lasallian school in El Paso, TX, will help students develop an understanding of immigration and life on the border.
Students will explore the many issues related to border realities such as: immigration, asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors, youth at risk, and the complex cultural dichotomy of the El Paso and Ciudad Juarez borderland. Representatives from various organizations from both sides of the border, such as Border Patrol and local nonprofits will host different sessions throughout the week to give participants an overall picture of the borderland.
Cretin-Derham Hall students will participate alongside Cathedral students, learning from their experiences as well.
"This trip is a perfect opportunity to learn about our sisters and brothers on the border and love them without distinction," said Becky Medellín '88, Justice Education Trip In-House Coordinator. It's an opportunity to embrace the traditions of the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of St. Joseph and learn about a complex issue first hand and be immersed in the crisis that we are suffering on our southern border. It's an opportunity to hear, first hand, about why people need to flee their homelands and what they are willing to risk to come to our country. Like all of our Justice Education Trips, this one will also help students to see a new reality and has the power to change minds and hearts. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about immigration policy or life on the border to sign up for this trip."
