Food for Hogs
September 7, 2016
Cretin-Derham Hall has launched two new environmental initiatives for the new school year. One is a Food for Hogs program, and the other is an upgrade of the recycling efforts throughout the campus. Both projects are funded by a grant from Ramsey County, which was matched by Cretin-Derham Hall. Food for Hogs is widely used throughout metro area schools. Organic waste from the kitchen and cafeteria is separated from recyclables and trash and regularly transported to a farm to feed the pigs. CDH students learn the value of using a resource which might otherwise become landfill material. School-wide recycling has also been enhanced with new "best practice" recycling and trash containers in every classroom, office, hallway, and common area. The new bins make recycling easier and look more attractive, too.
