Grand Opening of the Ryan STEM Center Brings New Opportunities

November 10, 2021

On November 8, Cretin-Derham Hall celebrated the Grand Opening of the Ryan STEM Center!

The Ryan STEM Center is comprised of two spaces and an office; one room is dedicated to planning, calculating, and designing, and the other is dedicated to hands-on projects. It will contain top-of-the-line equipment such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and a CNC router.

The STEM Center will be a resource for teachers of all disciplines, and STEM Coordinator Ellen Schafer '10 will be collaborating with faculty to develop innovative ways to use the equipment in classes ranging from World Languages to Art, in addition to our Science and Math courses.

"The vision for this space is to give students hands-on experiences and learning in a creative way. They'll be solving real-world problems and learning teamwork, collaboration, and communication," said Schafer.

The event featured a blessing from Father Pat Kennedy '69, and remarks from Schafer, President Frank Miley, Principal Mona Passman, Vice President for Advancement Rob Bollinger, and members of the Robotics team.

"STEM is really cool because it encompasses a huge variety of fields and subjects," said Izzi Lauer '22, one of the Robotics team members. "It can also help solve a vast array of problems. I really enjoy computer science specifically, and being a programmer on the Robotics team has given me many opportunities to apply what I've learned in the programming classes I've taken.

"I think the new STEM center is a really valuable addition to CDH because it will expand opportunities for both the robotics team and the greater CDH community. The cutting-edge equipment and increased resources will allow us to build and accomplish things that weren't possible before."

We are grateful to Ron '62 and Patty Ryan for their generous support of this wonderful new space.
