Boys Lacrosse
by Matt Hourigan, Head Boys Lacrosse Coach
There are 65 student-athletes competing this year on the boys Lacrosse Varsity, JV, and Prep (B) teams! Despite some challenging April weather, the season has gotten off to a great start. As of May 5, the Varsity squad has a record of 4-3, highlighted by two strong Suburban East Conference victories over Roseville and Mounds View and non-conference wins against Simley and Minnehaha Academy. The team is led by seniors Ian Obert (19g, 13a) and Joe Buckingham (75-141 FOs, 37gbs), and juniors Steven Budka (27 takeaways, 41gbs) and Carter Steele (16g, 14a). Senior Henry Lexau and sophomore Emmett Shaughnessy have combined for 60 saves splitting time between the pipes.
Softball
by Patrick Bowlin, Head Softball Coach
The Softball team picked up two wins last week with victories over tenth-ranked Stillwater Area and Mounds View. Behind strong defense and pitching from sophomore Stella Dolan, the Raiders held both teams in check while the offense produced enough runs to pick up big wins over conference and section opponents. Senior Kennedy Spiering homered in both games, including a walk-off two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Mounds View. Senior Anna Klein is leading the team with a .379 batting average and fellow senior Mady Morrison has been solid at the plate with two home runs thus far. The Raiders continue their stretch of games with the final six SEC games in the next two weeks.
Girls Lacrosse
by Joe Moss, Head Girls Lacrosse Coach
The girls Lacrosse team is off to a 5-2 start (5-0 in the SEC) and is sitting alone atop the conference after beating rivals Stillwater and Park. Senior defender Alexis Parker was named as a pre-season player to watch by the Star Tribune's Lax Hub. She has committed to continue her lacrosse career at Kent State University. Senior midfielder Elise Hitchcock was named an MVP of the Week by Minnesota Prep Spotlight. Senior attack Maya Quigley announced her intention to play women's lacrosse next season for Regis University in Colorado.
Boys Ultimate Frisbee
by Nick Giles, Head Ultimate Frisbee Coach
Like all spring teams, the beginning of the season was put on hold. Now that the snow has melted and the fields are dry, the boys Ultimate team, the Raging Safari, are out in full force. The team this year is split down the middle, half of the team are first-year players and nearly the entire other half are second-year players. The only four-year player, senior captain Jack Kimlinger (a two-time All-Conference player looking for number three this year), is leading this young team on the field. We have played three games as of May 5 and are 1-2 with “grind it out” near losses to veteran teams. The future is bright with young talents like juniors Sammy Rogers and Charlie Soltis, sophomores Adam Koenig and Willie Soltis, and freshmen Ben Spong and Luke Wicklund. Check the schedule on the CDH Raiders athletic page for upcoming games and information.
Clay Target Shooting
by Dave Becker, Head Clay Target Shooting Coach
The Clay Target Shooting team is having a great spring with 32 shooters participating in the shotgun shooting sports of Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. We have beginning shooters who have never shot a gun before to highly experienced shooters who are excelling and competing for awards with MNYESS (Minnesota Youth Education in the Shooting Sports). Eight shooters will compete at State with the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League on June 11 in Alexandria, MN. Dylan Jacobson, Stanley Lucas, Sam Martin, and Jack Rymanowski are competing in all three events – Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. Dylan and Stanley each have a perfect score (25/25) in a Trap competition with the season only half over.
Boys Tennis
by Randy Muetzel, Head Boys Tennis Coach
Senior Michael Montalbano has led the boys Tennis team as its first singles player. Michael has an individual record of 11-7 playing against a number of the top teams in the state. During a very short season, this week includes matches Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Next week we start the team sections.
Dance Team
by Ali Pendergrass, Co-Head Dance Coach
Concluding the winter season sixth in their section, the focus for the Dance team is to continue to build and grow the program for the 2018-19 season. The team utilizes the spring and summer seasons to build technique and strength to prepare for the fall performance and winter competitive seasons. Captains are focusing on spreading the word about winter tryouts (May 21-23) and other CDH dance opportunities. The summer season kicks off June 11 and runs Monday-Thursday evenings through July 26. The dance team will also travel to Brainerd, MN, for Just for Kix Dance Camp, July 15-18.
Track and Field Team
by Jerry Macken, Co-Head Track and Field Coach
Track and Field is excited for a potentially great 2018 season. On the girls' side, senior Lucia Frias-Wackman and sophomore Sydney Jackson return after a strong 2017 season where they were part of a State AA third-place finish and set the school record in the 4 x 400m relay. Sydney is one of the state’s top 400m runners. Senior Chan’el Anderson-Manning should be a key contributor in sprint events.
For the boys, senior sprinter James Williams, who has been one of the faster runners in the East Metro for four years, looks to make his final year his best. Pushing James are junior Rajiv Redd and sophomore Tony Underwood. In the shot put and discus events, senior Sean Brodie is someone who should not be overlooked. The imposing Brodie is the best CDH has had in years.
Counseling
by Joan O'Connell, College Counselor
The CDH Education Fair was held for junior students and their families on Monday, April 23. We hosted more than 100 colleges and universities that evening. Students found it to be a convenient way to make contact with admissions representatives and get their questions answered. A special thanks to the Post-Secondary Parent Committee for hosting a dinner for admissions representatives prior to the event!
Attention Juniors:
Be sure to check your CDH Naviance account for information about the college search process. Remember to take the online career inventories by clicking on “Do What You Are,” “StrengthsExplorer,” and “Career Interest Profiler” for some additional career possibilities!
The registration deadline for the June 9 ACT test is May 4. Late registration (with additional fees) will be accepted until May 18. Register online at ACTstudent.
The dates for the Minnesota Private College Week are June 25-29, 2018. All the private colleges in Minnesota welcome prospective students and their parents to campus, in both morning and afternoon sessions, during this week. Wisconsin’s private colleges will host a similar visiting week this summer, July 9-14, 2018. Call colleges or go online in advance to let them know you would like to attend.
The University of Minnesota is hosting a visit week this summer. The “Meet Minnesota” program runs June 18-22, 2018.
Attention Seniors:
Colleges will be sending you important information on housing, registration, and orientation. Be sure to read and respond to your emails.
A reminder that ALL colleges require a final transcript of your high school grades as a condition of enrollment so be sure to continue to do your best work! Major schedule changes or an obvious drop in grades this time of year can have consequences including the loss of merit scholarships and/or your spot in the incoming class.
It is contrary to the "Statement of Principles of Good Practice" of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling for students to make multiple college enrollment deposits. CDH will send only one final transcript in June. Consult with your counselor if you need help making your decision as the consequences of “multiple depositing” can include rescinding offers of admission.
Graduates in the Class of 2018 who have paid for PACC (Program for Advanced College Credit) credits from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and who want to get college credits for these courses must have a transcript sent from St. Mary’s to the college or university where the student will attend this fall. That school can then determine whether or not they will award college credit for this work in high school. To request an official St. Mary’s transcript, visit their website and search for PACC to be directed to the appropriate webpage for a transcript request. Questions? Call St. Mary’s at 1-800-635-5987 ext. 1501.
If you took CIS (College in the Schools) Classes at CDH through the University of Minnesota and want these classes to be considered for college credit at the school you will attend next fall you will need to request an official University of MN transcript. Go to their website and click “Grades & Transcripts” to request your transcript.
To send your AP scores to your college, go to https://apscore.collegeboard.org and follow instructions. Scores for tests taken in May of 2018 will be available in July.
Graduating seniors who are planning to attend state colleges and universities in Wisconsin must file a “Tuition Reciprocity Application” with the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office in order to receive tuition reciprocity. Applications for the 2018-19 academic year are available online at GetReadyforCollege. This application must be filed and approved before a student can register for classes at the reduced tuition rate - so don’t delay. If you are attending a public university in North or South Dakota, you should arrange for reciprocity through the school you will attend.
Remember that CDH teachers write hundreds of letters of recommendation for students as they apply to colleges and universities - over and above all the other responsibilities they have as classroom teachers and coaches. Be sure to let your recommenders know where you have decided to attend college in the fall and please take a moment to thank them for this very important work they do on your behalf.

JROTC
by LTC Jamie Fischer, SGM David Berrisford, and MSG Ken Peloski
Co-curriculars continue to meet in the morning to increase participation among our busy students.
The Armed Precision Drill is team tossing its rifles higher and higher as it prepares for the Twilight Parade on May 16. This year we will say goodbye to captain Johnathan Koop as he graduates. Next year’s captain is Mary Andrzejek.
Our Regulation Drill Team has ended its season as well. Our captain Leland Pornschloegl led the team to a very strong season showing. Next year’s team will be led by Margaret Musolf and she will be working towards qualifying the team to attend the national championships in 2019.
The Air Rifle Team’s season has now ended. It was a grand success and we have many student-athletes returning next year as a part of the team. Isaac Yahn did a wonderful job leading and inspiring the team. Next year we add another co-captain, Ethan Overland. With our co-captain’s leadership, the air rifle team should continue to improve and compete at a much higher level.
Our Honor Guard has been extremely busy this year and will be busy throughout the remainder of the school year and summer. We continue to assist families at wakes and funerals, as well as perform multiple school services at Open Houses and concerts. We will again help at the Baccalaureate Mass and the Graduation Ceremony on May 30. Our entire corps thanks our outgoing captain Joseph Seifert. He, along with junior co-captain Rory King, coordinated the volunteers and made the honor guard successful. We are excited for the new captains next year: returning senior Rory King plus juniors Monica Calkins and Jack Patwell. These three cadets have a wonderful rapport with their peers and we know they will continue the tradition of the honor guard answering the call for service.
Our Orienteering Team competed on April 21 at Lake Maria State Park and on April 28 at Interstate Park in Wisconsin. Our last meet is on May 12 at Cleary Lake. We have some very strong competitors this year, but could use more to regain the conference trophy. Andrew Bussen stepped up to lead the team this year and will continue to do so in 2018-19.
The Color Guard led the Highland Little League Parade again this year. In addition to presenting the colors at the Twilight Parade, they will support the re-dedication of a Civil War Memorial in St. Paul and the Memorial Day Commemoration at Elmhurst Cemetery.
The Flight Club enjoyed a successful spring with 30 members riding in a CH-47D Chinook from the Minnesota National Guard. We ended the year with a tour of the Control Tower at MSP Airport to learn how ground controllers work with pilots to make sure we get safely from point A to Point B.
Congratulations to our newest Junior Officers: Nick Ball, Charlie Casper, Sean Cobenais, Jackson Enquist, Quintin Fitzgerald, Mikey Hannon, Joe Sexton, and Ryan Snell. Those who took the test, but did not yet earn a high enough score, should schedule a time this summer (as soon as possible) to re-take the test with LTC Fischer.
We are grateful to John Schaller ’71 for the JROTC scholarship bearing his name. This will give dedicated cadets a great opportunity to earn tuition assistance for their education at CDH. Learn more on the admissions webpage.
We continue to receive updates on the results of the ROTC scholarships and Academy appointments. LTC Fischer will host a practice physical fitness test in May so juniors can make sure they know how to do a proper pushup! Everyone seeking a scholarship or appointment should try to complete as much of the application as possible before the start of their senior year.

Theater
by Katie Kreitzer, Theater Director
Congratulations to the cast, crew, and pit orchestra of the spring musical, "42nd Street" on their six fan"tap"stick performances.
With more than 40 seniors contributing to the success, this was truly a senior powerhouse of musical theater talent.
I am always reminded after directing a play, that theater is the sum of its parts. It takes so many parts to make a production happen. I am grateful to every person who helped make this show happen. This, of course, includes our audience.
