Learning by Experience in Upper Level Spanish

This year the upper-level students in Spanish 503 and 603 have had the opportunity to study language via experiential learning and the completion of individual projects. Since Trimester 1 students have deepened their language skills through a pedagogical approach incorporating art and culture of the Spanish speaking world and artistic expressions of the Latino community in Saint Paul.
Some of the exciting activities and research projects students completed included visiting and researching the history behind the murals in the Latino community on the West Side of Saint Paul; learning about history and culture via poetry; creating a personal ode in Spanish to the city of St. Paul; examining the intersection of food and culture in the Americas. Some of these projects are highlighted in our blog “Our Voice/ Nuestra voz." Finishing up the year we will be exploring contemporary and traditional Latin American rhythms and music. Our last project will be examining students’ personal stories related to our place in the world as they prepare to start a new journey after their time at CDH.
Look for projects and highlights in our new blog Our Voice/ Nuestra voz.
