Letter from the Principal

March 14, 2018

   Parents and Guardians,

I wrote my letter last month just before 17 people were massacred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Like many educators, parents, and students, I was deeply saddened by this shooting. Even in my role as a principal, I felt somewhat powerless to combat this violence in our nation’s schools.

Within hours of the shooting, something in our nation shifted. Young people started speaking out in ways we haven’t witnessed in decades. They started demanding safety in their schools. While many of the adults felt helpless, our students started to take action.

CDH students were no exception. Over 600 Cretin-Derham Hall students left school to attend a protest at the State Capitol last week. They had varying opinions on the best way to achieve school safety, but they were united in their message that something needs to change.

Many of our students exercised their right to march. Others disagreed and stayed behind. Still others simply chose to stay in class because that is where they wanted or needed to be. Of those who marched, some students did not support changes to our nation’s gun laws, but many others did. The amazing thing is that overall, students respected their classmates’ differing viewpoints. The adults leading this nation should take note. These students are showing us how to have a respectful national dialogue and get something accomplished.

I learned many lessons last week. First, while the quality of teaching and learning at CDH is outstanding, this protest reminds me that lifelong learning extends beyond the walls of the school building. This was a memorable learning experience for many of our students. Yes, those who marched missed classroom time, but nothing can replace this experience. Those students who opposed the march, or simply stayed behind also learned how to take a stand for their beliefs.

Above all else, the most valuable lesson I learned last week is that our students are truly our future leaders and we are in good hands. For this, I am grateful and proud.
