Ninth Graders Explore Multiple Intelligences
October 24, 2024
Every September, CDH ninth graders participate in a workshop on multiple intelligences (MI) as part of their Values classes. Led by Tommy Murray ‘97, this full-day session focuses on helping students discover their individual strengths and broaden their understanding of what it means to be “smart.”
The Values Teams co-facilitate the workshop with Murray, guiding students through self-assessments that explore the eight types of intelligences:
-
Music Smart (musical intelligence),
-
Spatial Smart (design intelligence),
-
Body Smart (kinesthetic learning),
-
Logic Smart (mathematical and logical reasoning),
-
Self Smart (intrapersonal awareness),
-
People Smart (interpersonal skills),
-
Nature Smart (environmental awareness)
-
Word Smart (verbal and written communication)
"CDH is committed to using differentiation and multiple intelligences in our curriculum because it supports the development of the entire student," said Murray. "When we provide multiple ways of demonstrating learning, every student experiences rigor, success, and the chance to identify areas of growth. Our students consistently report that they recognize being smart is defined in many ways by each of their fellow students."
CDH teachers have access to students' individual MI assessments, which offer valuable insights to better understand their unique learning styles. This workshop supports teachers in creating a learning environment where every student can thrive.
