Seniors Volunteer in Guatemala
December 19, 2019
From Nov. 22 to Dec. 1, a group of seniors visited the San Lucas Toliman Mission in Guatemala. While there, they had the opportunity to volunteer and learn about another culture.
Students shared a few highlights of the trip:
“The country and the overall views were stunning and the food was great. The people I volunteered with and for are some genuinely amazing people. I feel like I got to grow and gain a new perspective on the world thanks to this trip." - Lucille Johnston '20
“One of my favorite parts of the trip was walking through a colorful cemetery. I like their view of death much better than ours.” - Isaac Johnson '20
“My favorite part was the boat rides on the third day. The scenery was insane and the ride was so peaceful, yet bumpy. I love water and the blue lake was stunning, I wanted to jump in. Also, my sister and friend were on the boat so we all had a good long talk.” - Johnny Gaertner '20
“My favorite part was demolition day at the coffee site. I loved knocking down the wall with a sledgehammer. I also loved interacting with the people in San Lucas. I never encountered a single bad person. Their kindness and attitude toward life was beautiful.” - Isabel Basurto Poferl '20
“The best part of the trip for me was the service. I loved working alongside the homeowners and connecting with the families as the day went on. It was very rewarding and I will never forget how that felt.” - Travis Teeter '20
“My favorite part was visiting the women’s center. By washing clothing by hand, making tortillas, and balancing baskets on our heads, I was able to see how proud the women are of their culture. Seeing their hard work in everyday life made me respect them even more. I am honored that the women shared their things with us.” - Hanna Hausmann '20
