Students Commissioned to Create Annual CDH Christmas Card Art

December 14, 2023

Two CDH students were commissioned to create art for the annual Cretin-Derham Hall Christmas card.  Both pieces are on display in the school and feature completely different artistic approaches, even with a common subject, the Nativity. The piece entitled Mary and Newborn by Luna Cui '25 was selected for the 2023 card.

"In Mary & Newborn, I used oil pastels to create Mary holding her infant, Jesus," explained Luna.  I tried to emphasize Mary’s face and hair with strong lines, and her clothing with soft lines, and a yellow background. I wanted Jesus to have a shiny gold crown."

Lucas Roberto '26 created his piece with aerosol (spray paint) and sprayed through multiple hand cut & designed stencils to make  the final image. The final image is the result of a precise order of each stencil and color.

Art teacher Sue Cranston noted the diligence of these two artists to create art.  Neither student is enrolled in an art class this trimester, but would come into the art room to work on their pieces on their own.

Teri McCloughan, Interim President, congratulated both students for their creative talents and professionalism in using their skills to design art for a specific purpose. "I am so proud to be able to feature a talented student-artist this year.  Both Luna and Luke shared their unique talent to enhance our holidays.  Their creative expression is an inspiration to us all during this holy time of the year."
