Teachers Train on Assessment Strategies

February 2, 2021

Rebecca Stobaugh, PhDOur faculty takes pride in excelling at their work. Continuing education ensures that every teacher, whether they are in their first year or have been teaching for decades, has the opportunity to upgrade their skills and provide the best possible classroom experience for our students.

"Teachers are life long learners and having professional development that is consistent and inclusive is the goal of the Instructional Leadership Team," said Tommy Murray '97, a science teacher and member of the team. "The overall goal is shifting how we teach so that our methods are current and progressive. When we include our entire teaching staff in this process, everyone learns together which gives us a rich experience that can be built upon and we can continue to evolve."

On Monday, Feb. 1, during a teacher in-service day, Rebecca Stobaugh, PhD, provided a training on Authentic Assessment. Stobaugh is an assistant professor at Western Kentucky University. She teaches assessment and unit-planning courses, supervises first-year teachers, and consults with school districts on critical thinking, instructional strategies, assessment, technology integration, and other topics. She previously provided training at CDH last spring.

Assessment is a critical part of teaching, because it makes sure that teachers know what their students understand and what still needs review.

"Authentic Assessment is a method that raises the level of expectations on the students by giving them more proficiency-based ways of showing us what they have learned," Murray said. "They can also apply and synthesize what they have learned so they are not just regurgitating information but creating and applying the specific learning goal of that chapter or lesson."

We are proud to offer high-quality training to our staff, and support them in continuing to provide high-quality education to our students.
