Members of the new Creative Writing Club.

In years previous, CDH has had a creative writing club. It has been many millennia since the spawn of a new, reinforced creative writing club, but this is the year. In the spring of 2019, Cecilia Shearon '21, Marie Evenson '21, Glenna Wethington '21, and Michael Langevin '21 approached English teachers Jody Cornett and Sheila Malone-Povolny, who generously accepted the positions of advisors of the Creative Writing Club. The final step was getting approved by Dean Aaron Benner, the commander-in-chief of all approvable endeavors, and yee-haw, it did get approved.

Creative Writing Club started on a sleepy Thursday morning at 7:07 am. Fourteen apprehensive individuals had the defining moment of their lives that morning. Creative Writing Club was the milk to their corn flakes, the dimple to their smile, the butter to their fly, and the avocado to their toast.

At meetings, the possé typically introduces themselves with their names and the answer to a given check-in question. From there, the club discusses anything they’ve written, anything delicious that they’ve read, or just what’s on their minds recently. The Club started giving weekly writing prompts for members to complete and share at the following week’s meeting. The number of Creative Writers has been increasing steadily as the weeks progress.

In the future, we hope to prevent cancellations of the Spring Variety Show, which occurred last year, by fueling it with live poetry reads, portraying of written scenes, and the performance of songs, produced by the members of The Club.

The new and improved Creative Writing Club hopes to avoid the sudden downfall of previous Creative Writing Clubs. The new club will continue to meet on Thursdays until the end of time or until the sun burns out— whichever one comes later.
